ESBOZO HISTORICO DE LA DERMATOLOGIA EN EL HOSPITAL VARGAS DE CARACAS

Resumen

Dos Hospitales han influido en el establecimiento y
desarrollo de la dermatología venezolana. El Hospital San Luis de
París y el Hospital Vargas de Caracas. El primero porque allá se
formaron muchos de los dermatólogos que trabajaron en el Hospital
Vargas y éste porque aquí se dieron las oportunidades para
establecer la dermatología. El fundador de ésta en Venezuela fue el
Dr. Manuel Pérez Díaz quien organiza 1 primer Servicio de la
especialidad en 1904 y en 1908 f el primer Profesor de la Cátedra
Libre de Dermatología y ifilografía creada en ese año. Siguieron
sucesivamente como Profesores de esa Cátedra los Dres. M.
Jiménez Rivero, Pablo Guerra, Martín Vegas, L. Briceño Iragorry,
C.J. Alarcón, J. Convit. En 1958 se trasladó la Cátedra al Hospital
Universitario quedando en el Hospital Vargas un Servicio de
Dermatología que más tarde llegó a ser Cátedra. En 1971 se crea el
Instituto Nacional de Dermatología de gran trascendencia en la
historia de la dermatología en Venezuela; éste se denominó más
tarde Instituto de Biomedicina. Lo descrito es la fase inicial de la
dermatología en Venezuela.

SUMMARY
Two hospitals had a great influence in the development of
the dermatology in Venezuela: The Saint Louis Hospital in Paris and
the Vargas Hospital in Caracas. The first because there were trained a
great number of dermatologists who afterward came to work in
Venezuela. The second because here were established in 1904, the
first clinic and then, in 1908, the first Chair of Dermatology and
Syphilography, in charge of both successively was Manuel Pérez Díaz
trained in the Saint Louis. He is the founder of the Venezuelan dermatology.
After him came the Professors: M. Jiménez Rivero, Pablo
Guerra, Martín Vegas, L. Briceño Iragorry, C.J., Alarcón y Jacinto
Convit. In 1958 the Chair (Cathedra) was moved to the newly founded
University Hospital remaining in the Vargas Hospital only a
Dermatology Clinic which was later transformed in a new Cathedra of
Dermatology. A fact of great importance for the Venezuelan
dermatology was the foundation in 1971 of the National Institute of
Dermatology (renamed afterward Institute of Biomedicine).
What it has been described is the initial period of the
development of the Dermatology in Venezuela specially in the
Hospital Vargas.
