Barrera Cutánea

Resumen

La piel es un órgano biosensor, regulador de la temperatura corporal y sirve como medio de defensa primaria. Su capa más externa, el estrato córneo, constituye la barrera epidérmica contra la pérdida de agua y su adecuado funcionamiento es un requisito para la vida terrestre. Su especializada estructura y la delicada organización de sus componentes, así como el equilibrio entre el proceso de queratinización y descamación son esenciales para la homeostasis de la piel, que puede verse alterada tanto por factores intrínsecos como extrínsecos, conduciendo al desarrollo de enfermedades cutáneas como la dermatitis atópica, psoriasis, ictiosis, entre otras. La comprensión de la estructura y funcionamiento de la barrera cutánea permite aplicar cuidados básicos de mantenimiento de la piel sana y al mismo tiempo realizar acciones terapéuticas dirigidas a restaurar la función de barrera de la piel enferma.

Abstract
The skin is a biosensory organ which regulates the body temperature and serves as a primary defense system. The outermost layer of the skin, the horny layer, constitutes the epidermal barrier against the loss of water and its adequate function is a requirement for terrestrial life. The specialized structure and the delicate organization of its components, as well as the balance between the keratinization process and scaling are essential for the homeostasis of the skin. This homeostasis can become altered by either intrinsic or extrinsic factors, leading to the development of cutaneous diseases such as atopic dermatitis, psoriasis and ichthyosis, among others. The comprehension of the structure and function of the cutaneous barrier permits the application of basic measures to maintain a healthy skin and at the same time to introduce therapeutic actions in order to restore the defensive barrier function of the diseased skin.
